Quit googling “israel internships summer 2022”. If you're considering a summer internship in Israel in 2022, or an Israel internship for any time during the year, you've come to the right place.

If you're wondering whether you should even consider an Israel internship during the pandemic, we'll get to that in a minute.

Not only does this article have the longest list of internships, it has answers to common questions, success stories to inspire you and help you choose, many Israel flag emoji and even a downloadable spreadsheet you can use to keep track of your applications.

Bookmark this article and return to it regularly. I try to keep it updated as much as possible.

Latest update: November 2021

Do you know anyone who has already done an internship in Israel?

How to use this list

Start by downloading your spreadsheet copy (will open in a new browser tab).

Next, go through the internships list below, using the spreadsheet to note which programs to apply for, and later, track your progress.

Keep in mind as you go through the list is that while some of the internships listed below are paid internships, many have significant fees to cover besides airfare and living expenses.

Even if your parents can help out or you can dip into some of your own savingsr, it might not be enough. So…

How will you fund your Israel internship?

internships in israel 1

Here are some ideas on how to pay your way:

  1. Grants – for example, many of the internships listed here allow you to cover at least part of your fees with a Masa grant
  2. Funds and scholarships – apply for funds and scholarships, such as Keith Berman's fund. Top Israel Interns has a great list of scholarships on their site. Also, many of the organizations listed offer their own scholarships, such as WUJS Israel.
  3. Crowdfunding – crowdfund your internship using Gofundme like Molly did
  4. Fundraise – once they got accepted for an internship, Ashley & Carley sold tshirts to pay for the trip

What about paid internships in Israel?

Most of the internship programs listed here are not for paid internships, but there are some, such as the positions at Facebook, Microsoft and a few other companies below.

There are two kinds of Israel internship programs: paid programs providing an “authentic Israeli experience” aimed at students coming from abroad who want to enjoy Israel while getting work experience, and local employers who simply want to hire interns for paid or non-paid internships. The latter are mainly aimed at Israelis but if you meet their requirements, of course you can apply.

Other questions and remarks I've had about Israel internships in general:

Should you even look for an Israel internship during the coronavirus pandemic?

The coronavirus doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon, but with so many people triple-vaccinated in Israel, most restrictions here have already been removed or relaxed after 4 waves of the virus. Hopefully there won't be any more by the summer. Regardless, keep checking the Israeli Ministry of Health's travel regulations page to know if you're eligible to travel here as your arrival date gets closer.

That said, due to COVID-19, many companies shifted to hybrid working, some days in the office and some remotely. One silver lining is that it's never been easier to get a virtual internship. If you can demonstrate being able to work remotely, propose yourself to companies you could help. You'll need to reach out directly to them as opposed to going through a program such as Way More Israel. Your 2022 Israel internship may very well not be in Israel, but rather from the comfort of your home.

For example, try contacting companies who have hired in-house interns in the past by searching LinkedIn for those ex-interns. In parallel, if you don't speak Hebrew, look for other local companies who have English websites and propose how you could help them (this applies for companies anywhere in the world too, by the way).

At worst, this research will help you learn about companies you can begin networking with, putting you at the head of the line when they restart their temporarily-closed internship program in the future, and hopefully that will be soon enough for you.

I already participated in a MASA-supported program. How can I get another internship?

In that situation, MASA is actually working against you as a big bottleneck since so many programs are connected to them, so you would need to aim for employers who aren't connected to MASA, which is most Israeli employers, but you don't know which ones are open to interns like you.

Your best bet is to research Israeli companies you'd like to intern for (with priority to those who have hired interns in the past) and start building a relationship with them from abroad, learning where you could help them, connecting with employees on LinkedIn (ideally managers who could potentially hire you). Don't ask for an internship in the first message. Once you have an internal contact and better understanding of company needs & goals, propose a non-paid internship that you could do on a standard 3-6 month tourist visa. Since the company probably doesn't have an internship program, you'll have no competition but you will have convincing to do.

Any internships in Israel for non-Jews?

Many of the internships do specifically say they're aimed at Jews, but not all. If you're not Jewish, avoid organizations that specifically mention Judaism or Zionism in their name or internship description. If you take a look at the success stories, you'll see a few are from non-Jews.

Any internships for Israeli students?

Most of the programs are aimed at giving foreign students an authentic Israeli experience, which is why they often have fees such as for travel and accommodations. However, there are a few programs and openings that anyone can apply for, including local students. Basically, if the description doesn't mention the above fees, there's a good chance it's open to Israeli students as well.

The internship I want is no longer available, or the deadline has passed.

If there's an internship that interests you but the application deadline has passed, you should still reach out to the organization. On the one hand, there may be some flexibility if the application deadline was recent. On the other hand, last minute cancellations mean open spots for you.

Ultimately, the list is like a job board. It's up to the organizations featured to update about any changes to their listings.

I'm going to be in Israel for a short period of time. Are there any internships available then?

It usually takes time for interns to learn the ropes and become productive, so most internships are more than a couple of weeks. While there are exceptions where you can step in and help right away, there's still the issue of your timing matching the organization's.

With those issues in mind, your best bet for a short term internship is to research organizations (commercial, academic, non-profit) you could help and propose an internship to them.

What are the benefits of going through an internship placement program as opposed to applying to companies directly?

Chaya from Top Israel Interns explains:

  • We have a whole team of placement coordinators who know the Israeli job/internship market and already have relationships with some of the top companies in Israel. A lot of companies in Israel prefer to work with TII as oppose to an individual because they know us and because they know that we are credible (for example-we do background checks)
  • We provide accommodations. For a foreigner it can be quite tedious and difficult to find and lease an apartment. We take care of all of that for our participants so they don't have to.
  • We provide social events for our participants. Our participants have weekly evening activities with their madrichim and day trips where they have the opportunity to explore the country.
  • We also provide Career Advancement programs that include but are not limited to workshops on public speaking and entrepreneurship!

    Great article, such detailed explanations!
however, the download link for the internship opportunities is not working for me. I would really appreciate it if you could inbox me the list.
    Thanks!

Jinternship.com link doesn’t work. You may need to reset it.

Thanks for mentioning it. It looks like their website is down. Earlier this week, I had their rep confirm that their description in the article was correct, so this must be a temporary issue and I just notified their rep in case they didn’t know.

The link is working again. It looks like they may have upgraded their site over the weekend.

my 20 year old son has arranged for a very cool internship for college credit but the Israeli organization doesn’t really know how to house him – do you know of any organizations that can assist. preferably housing him with other young people with some structure. thanks

That’s a good question. Unfortunately, I don’t yet have an answer. Most of the programs listed here in the article help with housing on some level except where the internship is clearly aimed at Israelis who are assumed to have a place to live. The best option is probably to join apartment/roommate seeking facebook groups and start looking, even from abroad.
